Zara Fischer-Harrison
I currently work with adults concerned with various issues affecting their lives. My main areas of focus include: Adult ADHD and late diagnosis; Anxiety; Depression; Psychosis; General Stress, Burnout, Compassion Fatigue and/or Overwhelm. I bring my personal experience to the table, especially when working with solo parents, the Queer community, and frontline health and social service workers.
Most of my nursing career has been spent on the streets, ravines, and bus shelters of the City of Toronto, working with the community’s most vulnerable. I made sure that my clients, all of whom suffered from complex mental illnesses, and some with concurrent substance use and dependence, received the mental health and medical care they required with dignity and respect. It was a natural progression in my career toward psychotherapy, as this was a key component of the work once clients became more stable, housed, and motivated to make changes to better their own quality of life.
My professional compass is guided by human dignity, recovery, harm reduction, non-judgment, and a client-centered approach. I work within trauma-informed and anti-racist/anti-oppressive principles and values. I firmly believe that everyone has the potential to achieve mental wellness with the right tools and support.
My approach to mental health includes talk therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Somatics and Polyvagal Theory, Mindfulness, and Self-compassion. I am eager to begin my studies in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and inevitably, many more modalities as I build a rich toolbox to assist client growth and healing.
On my wall, you’ll find:
- Bachelor of Arts, Honours, in Social Development Studies, Psychology Minor, and a Certificate in Sexuality, Marriage, and the Family from the University of Waterloo (2005).
- Diploma in General Studies in Social Work from Renison College (2005).
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Toronto (2015).
- Certificate in Concurrent Disorders from CAMH (2019).
- Certificate in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy from Wilfrid Laurier University (2023).
Outside my professional roles, I enjoy parenting my spicy toddler, tooling around in the garden, building community, and starting (not always completing) home reno and DIY projects.
I sincerely hope you will reach out and book a consult call now to see if your hunch is right. I may just be the fit you’re looking for.
